George's Story

For those of you that know me you'll find this had to believe, but it has been quite difficult to think of what I want to say here. ( I know most of you couldn't get me to be quiet) However, one of the reasons for being on classmates is to reconnect with friends and others and first to apologize. There are several people that I have wronged or hurt never maliciously, but seems without feeling. It took me years of being a psychologist myself til I discovered I had both Bipolar Disorder and ADHD. This is not an excuse for the past behaviors, but it has helped me to put a light on past behaviors ( including the non-stop know-it-all ). With that said, I'm Sorry. There are some of you who i would like to contact to apologize personally. One of the disadvantages of having near prefect recall, is replaying my behaviors from the past. But enough of that. I've had the opportunity to travel far and wide and to appreciate new and different cultures. Including seeing many things that challenges your world views. I have spent most my career after the USAF working for non-profit mental health agencies. The clients I work with humble me seeing the dignity and depth of spirit they exhibit in even the most trying times. One of the reasons that I decided to make a statement about my own mental illness to to take a stand against the stigma about who is mentally and is perpetuated by both the mental health profession and the media. Most people with a mental illness function well in society and the only ones that may know are friends or family members, even the more severe symptoms can be controlled as in any other chronic medical disorder, i.e. diabetes or epilepsy. If you have gotten this far, sorry for my soapbox. Thanks to the Air Force, I've had the opportunity to do the globe trotting that I mention. However after being at the Defense Language Intsitute, in Monterey, CA, I fell in love with the West Coast and now I live on an island in the middle of Puget Sound. I hope that some of you remember time at YFC with Harold, Cliff, Tim, and I sometimes sneaking out of the rallies at Moody. I have to say that God was faithful and even though I tried to fall away from ...Expand for more
Him, the Hound of Heaven chased me through several of the bases, actually being there before me and put alot of "Christians" around me, as room mates, neighbors, and supervisors, so I just couldn't get away form Him, for which I am thankful. Otherwise over the last many years I've led an average life, and avid photographer, which paid for school what the VA didn't, one daughter attending Washington State University, to be an engineer and the other in high school, she is an avid writer and your stereotype teenager. Working all sorts of crazy hours pun intended, as I am involved with crisis and emergency mental health interventions. I remain a techno-geek and my book collection (mostly S-F and professional) is pushing me out of the house. Now in keeping with not being to verbose, Yes I know I still have talked too LONG, I hope to hear from you and your life adventures. And if they let this part stay in, you can contact me at: drbob1138 at comcast dot net 12/13/2017 Needed to write an update to my profile. For the last 4 years I have been medically retired due to complications of Myasthenia Gravis, which is an auto-immune disorder, as well as, a neuro-muscular disorder. It cause weakness and loss of control of the voluntary muscles. The reason for this update is to encourage anyone who may have been in Viet Nam or at several of the military bases in Thailand, during the Viet Nam War to get checked out and get enrolled on the Agent Orange Registry with the VA. Even if you only step foot in country for a day, you may have been exposed. For the bases in Thailand, they were usually fogged daily with a mixture that include Agent Orange with other herbicides and insecticides. This exposure has been known to cause various cancers and other auto-immune disorders, including Hashimoto's which is hypothyroidism. The symptoms are insidious and may not manifest until late 50's. If you believe you may have been exposed, please contact a Community Service Officer at the VFW, DAV, or the American Legion . Also for any Vet of any conflict or not, if you are facing a crisis and need someone to talk to, Please Call the Veteran's Crisis line at 800-273-8255, then press 1.
